Lower back pain and Sciatica

Our qualified team is equipped to get you out of pain and rehabilitate a wide range of lower back pain conditions and injuries

Lower back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek physiotherapy — and fortunately, it’s also one of the conditions we’re best equipped to help with.

Whether it’s a recent flare-up, a long-standing issue, or pain radiating down the leg, physiotherapy plays a key role in recovery.

Common causes of lower back pain

Most lower back pain is non-specific, meaning it isn’t caused by a serious underlying condition or structural damage. It often results from:

  • Prolonged sitting
  • Muscle imbalances or weakness
  • Sudden changes in activity or loading
  • Stress or poor sleep contributing to muscle tension and sensitisation
  • Disc irritation or nerve root compression/irritation
  • History of back injury or lack of movement variety

In most cases, back pain is not caused by something serious — and it improves with the right movement and guidance.

How we assess lower back pain

Our physiotherapists will take the time to fully understand your symptoms and how they’re affecting your life. We’ll assess:

  • Spinal mobility and flexibility
  • Muscle strength and control (core, hips, glutes)
  • Functional movements (e.g., bending, squatting, lifting)
  • Neural tension or sensitivity (if leg symptoms are present)
  • Movement habits, work environment, and activity levels
  • Screening to rule out serious pathology (red flags)

We explain everything clearly and build a plan tailored to your body, lifestyle, and goals.

How physiotherapy can help your back pain?

Education and Reassurance

Understanding that back pain is common, manageable, and rarely linked to serious damage is powerful.

Education and reassurance are among the most effective treatments for low back pain (Lin et al., 2019).

Exercise-Based Rehabilitation

Targeted movement and strengthening reduce pain, improve confidence, and restore function — particularly for the trunk, glutes, and hips.

Exercise improves outcomes in both acute and chronic low back pain (Steiger et al., 2012; Hayden et al., 2021).

Manual Therapy

In some cases, hands-on techniques may help reduce pain, restore movement, or facilitate exercise tolerance in the early stages.

Nerve-Specific Treatment

For nerve-related symptoms, we may use neural mobility exercises, unloading positions, and graded strengthening to improve mobility and reduce nerve sensitivity.

A combined approach of exercise, education, and neural mobilisation has been shown to improve outcomes (Stafford et al., 2007).

Return to Work or Sport Planning

We’ll guide you on safely returning to work, exercise, or sport — with a focus on resilience and independence.
