Calf injuries

What are calf injuries?

Calf injuries refer to a range of problems affecting the muscles and tendons at the back of your lower leg, primarily the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles, along with their tendons. These injuries can cause pain, stiffness, swelling, and difficulty walking or running.

Common calf issues include acute muscle strains or tears, chronic muscle tightness, Achilles tendinopathy, and less commonly, conditions like compartment syndrome or nerve entrapments. Because the calf plays a key role in walking, running, and jumping, calf injuries can significantly impact daily activities and athletic performance.

Common causes of calf injuries

Calf injuries can develop from a variety of factors, such as:

  • Acute muscle strains or tears from sudden acceleration, jumping, or overstretching
  • Overuse or repetitive stress leading to tendinopathy
  • Poor warm-up or fatigue causing reduced muscle readiness and injury risk
  • Biomechanical issues like overpronation or calf muscle imbalances
  • Improper footwear or training errors including sudden changes in activity level or surface
  • Medical conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or chronic exertional compartment syndrome (rare but serious)

How we can help with your calf injury

Our physiotherapy approach is tailored to your specific calf condition, focusing on accurate diagnosis, targeted treatment, and safe return to activity.

Detailed Assessment

We evaluate your symptoms, movement patterns, and injury history to identify the exact nature of your calf problem. When needed, we collaborate with your medical team to rule out serious conditions.

Rehabilitation for Muscle Strains & Tears

We guide you through a phased rehab program including pain management, gentle mobility exercises, progressing to strength and endurance training as healing occurs.

Evidence supports early controlled loading for better healing and reduced re-injury risk (Heiderscheit et al., 2010)

Management of Achilles Tendinopathy

If your symptoms relate to the Achilles tendon, we use progressive loading exercises such as eccentric or heavy slow resistance training combined with load modification.

Strong evidence supports these interventions for Achilles tendinopathy (Silbernagel et al., 2012)

Addressing Chronic Muscle Tightness & Imbalances

We offer manual therapy, stretching, and corrective exercise to improve muscle flexibility and balance, reducing strain on the calf complex.

Combining manual therapy with active rehab improves outcomes (Maffulli et al., 2011)

Education & Prevention Strategies

We provide advice on activity modification, footwear, warm-up routines, and gradual progression to minimize risk of recurrence.

Prevention programs reduce calf injury incidence in athletes (Sherry & Best, 2004)
