Shoulder conditions

Suffering from shoulder pain and injury?

We provide expert physiotherapy care for all types of shoulder injury and pain
The shoulder is one of the most mobile — and therefore unstable — joints in the body. This makes it especially vulnerable to pain and dysfunction.

At West Coast Physiotherapy, some of the most common shoulder conditions we assess and treat include:

  • Rotator cuff tendinopathy or tears
  • Shoulder impingement
  • Shoulder instability or dislocation
  • Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis)
  • Post-surgical rehabilitation
  • Bursitis
  • AC joint sprains
  • Referred pain from the neck or thoracic spine

Common causes of shoulder pain and injury

Shoulder problems can develop gradually or suddenly. Some of the most frequent contributing factors include:

  • Repetitive overhead activities (e.g., sport, gym work, trades)
  • Muscle imbalances or poor shoulder blade control
  • Sudden trauma, falls, or lifting injuries
  • Degenerative changes related to age or load
  • Lack of mobility or joint stiffness
  • Previous injuries or surgery affecting shoulder function

How we assess shoulder conditions

We begin with a thorough history and physical examination to understand the nature of your pain, functional limitations, and contributing lifestyle or training factors.

Our assessment may include:

  • Range of motion testing (active and passive)
  • Rotator cuff strength tests
  • Shoulder stability and special tests
  • Scapular control assessment
  • Neck and thoracic screening
  • Functional or sport-specific movement testing
If needed, we’ll liaise with your GP or specialist for imaging or surgical consultation.

How we can help treat your shoulder pain and injury

Our treatment approach is grounded in current research and tailored to your condition, stage of recovery, and personal goals.

Exercise-Based Rehabilitation

Targeted strengthening — especially for the rotator cuff and scapular stabilisers — is the foundation of effective treatment for most shoulder issues.

Exercise therapy significantly reduces pain and improves function in shoulder impingement and rotator cuff-related pain (Littlewood et al., 2013; Kuhn, 2009).

Manual Therapy (When Appropriate)

Hands-on techniques may be used to improve joint mobility, reduce soft tissue tension, and assist pain relief in the short term.

Manual therapy combined with exercise can improve pain and mobility, especially in frozen shoulder or early-stage rehab (Ho et al., 2009).

Load Management & Activity Modification

We help you adjust aggravating movements, manage load, and stay active in a safe and productive way.

Movement Retraining

Correcting faulty movement patterns or scapular control can reduce strain on the shoulder during daily or sporting activity.

Education & Long-Term Planning

We’ll guide you through the recovery timeline, expected progress, and self-management strategies to reduce the risk of recurrence.

A multimodal approach including education, load management, and exercise provides the best outcomes across most shoulder conditions (Hanratty et al., 2012).

Physio for shoulder pain and injury: FAQs

Many shoulder issues, including rotator cuff problems, can be accurately diagnosed with a clinical exam. Imaging is often unnecessary early on and doesn’t always change treatment.
