Use our expertise for effective neck injury treatment and rehabilitation.
Neck pain is a common condition affecting the upper spine, often experienced as stiffness, soreness, or discomfort in the neck and surrounding muscles. It may also be associated with headaches, shoulder tension, or even pain radiating into the arms. Neck pain can be acute (short-term) or chronic (persisting longer than 3 months), and may be triggered by physical strain or stress.
Most neck pain is considered non-specific, meaning it isn’t caused by serious injury or disease but rather a combination of mechanical and lifestyle factors.
Common causes of neck pain
Neck pain can result from a wide range of physical and behavioural factors:
Muscle strain – overuse or repetitive movements, often from desk-based or manual jobs
Stress and tension – stress can lead to protective muscle guarding
Inactivity – lack of movement or exercise can reduce tissue tolerance
Previous injury – old whiplash or sports injuries can contribute to persistent symptoms
Poor sleep – whether because of poor sleep posture or poor sleep in general
How we can help manage neck pain
We take an active and evidence-based approach to the assessment and treatment of neck pain. Our goal is to help reduce your pain, restore confident movement, and prevent future flare-ups.
Comprehensive Assessment
We take time to understand your symptoms, history, and lifestyle to identify contributing factors and guide a personalised plan. Most cases of neck pain do not require scans, as they rarely change the course of treatment.
Supported by: International Clinical Guidelines for Neck Pain, 2017
Targeted Exercise Therapy
Movement is essential for recovery. We guide you through specific neck and upper back exercises to improve strength and mobility.
Research shows exercise significantly improves neck pain intensity and disability (Gross et al., Cochrane Review, 2015)
Manual Therapy (If Appropriate)
Hands-on treatment like joint mobilisation and soft tissue techniques may be used to reduce pain and restore movement, particularly in the early stages.
Postural & Ergonomic Education
Contrary to popular belief, “perfect” posture isn't the solution — building movement variety is key.
Backed by recent research showing that posture variation and movement breaks are more important than rigid positioning (Caneiro et al., 2019)
Education & Reassurance
Understanding that most neck pain is not caused by serious damage is a key part of recovery. We help you make sense of your symptoms, reduce fear, and get back to activity confidently.
Education has been shown to reduce pain-related worry and improve outcomes in people with spinal pain (Louw et al., 2011)
Physio for neck pain: FAQs
There’s no single "perfect" posture. It’s prolonged static positions and lack of movement that contribute to discomfort. Regular movement and strengthening are more important than sitting up straight all day.
Most people with neck pain don’t need scans. Imaging often shows common age-related changes that don’t explain pain and can lead to unnecessary worry. A thorough physiotherapy assessment is usually more useful in guiding treatment.
